Sorry About Your Dad Episode 8: Virginia Jones

"He went out just as he would have wanted. In the parking lot of a casual eatery."

Comedian Virginia Jones and I have some things in common. We’ve both been found trying to elbow our respective ways to the top of the Portland comedy heap, and we both had largely adult-free childhoods. Yes, there WERE adults, somewhere. Just not at home. I thought I had known the extent of wild adolescent transgressions but then I talked to Virginia and who knew you could huff the freon in your air conditioner? I mean I guess you can huff a lot of things. My family is pretty chubby so maybe nobody was willing to give up that cool cool air during the summer. Just kidding, we never had air conditioning, you dummy!

"Raised" in Texas, she vows never to go back, while her dad stayed Texas loyal until his death last year.

In addition to her dad, we discuss how having good parents can ruin a person, why Russell Brand loves fat women but won’t date them, and what’s worse - a baby or AIDS?

And if you don’t make it to the end, just fast forward because HER LAUGH AT THE END! What a laugh! She’s the best.

Sorry About Your Dad Episode 7: Ryan Alexander-Tanner

In this episode, I reunite with Ryan, a very old friend and comic artist in Portland. Best known for drawing the Dave’s Killer Bread logo and many of the portraits in the Portland Mercury, he has also published several graphic novels including Bill Ayers’ manifesto on the state of American Education.

He also made this great print of David Byrne that is now on my mantle

We chat about surrogate dads, our friendship, alleged domestic terrorists, crazy dudes who run comic book stores, faster than light speed travel, lesbian moms and bread companies.

He ate my entire bowl of grapes!

Sorry About Your Dad Episode 6: Live from Portland! / SHUT UP, LADY

Oh shit, this took FOREVER! And now that it’s all behind us, we can move on and put out a bunch more awesome episodes. Got two in the ol’ can aready. SORRY SORRY SORRY

Anyway back in October we recorded a live version of Sorry About Your Dad from a cafe in Portland, starring these amazing folks. I was so proud of the non-comedians for taking this leap, and for the comedians leaving their joke security blankets behind and opening their hearts and lives to us. It was really an honor. Despite one major hiccup…

Check them out on the internet!

Randy Mendez @OldManRendo
Ryan White @ThatRyanWhite
Andie Main @AndieMain
Eric Cash @EricCash
Shannan Hunt @TheShannanHunt

Music by Savages. They fucking RULE and never would have put up with this bullshit behavior.

I just returned from the Laugh Your Asheville Off Festival, where I met funny Tennesseean Gary Fletcher. I pegged him right away for some sweet hot dad issues!

We met up in my Super 8 hotel to talk about the South, apocalypse chickens / what you need to buy when the world is ending, how you get ex-communicated from a made-up Baptist church, TV dads, open caskets, his mom’s multiple marriages, and why people who blindly hate all Christians are more ignorant than the people they hate.

It was a great conversation with a great dude and new bud. Gary did not have one single photo of himself with his dad. So that’s why the clown nose. :(

A fast friend when I moved to Portland, Emily Overstreet has been a great addition to my life. She’s talented and optimistic and her combination of whimsy and wisdom inspires me every single day. She’s like a stubborn silly unicorn on roller skates…there’s probably some risk of being speared if you cross her, but you’ll be so charmed by the time it happens you’ll barely notice. Then Emily will feel bad and wipe up all your blood.

In this episode of SAYD, Emily talks about her father’s affair, getting married as an 18 yr old and then divorced at 25, what dolphin skin feels like, and teaches us all the proper way to react upon discovering bad news in an Applebee’s. We also make a very roaring fire.

She is just the best.

Episode BONUS! You get to hear Great Wilderness. You’re gonna like it.

Jeffrey Hamilton Oliver, as his name suggests, is a fine young gentleman born to a lovely lady and this guy in the bathtub. He wasn’t born IN the bathtub but that would be pretty cute if he had been!
In the first of two episodes (it’s a cliffhanger!) Jeff tells us why he hasn’t seen his father in over a decade, even though he lives just a few hours away. We talk about the Olympics, how the Sudan is messed up, and how much Jeff loves soccer.
We also had pancakes.
